Ready to put your Spanish skills to the test?
Try translating these sentences into Spanish:
It’s raining a lot.
I’m glad it’s raining a lot.
Got your answers? Let’s see how you did!
“Está lloviendo mucho” or simply “Llueve mucho.” Easy, right?
But the second one? It’s a bit trickier: “Me alegra que esté lloviendo mucho.”
Notice the subtle shift? Instead of “está lloviendo,” we used “esté.” That’s the magic of the subjunctive! This mood lets us express our feelings about facts or events.
Subjunctive in construction
Think it’s complicated? Think again! Here’s a quick guide:
Start with the yo form of the present tense.
Example: Hablar becomes hablo (I speak).
Drop the final -o.
Now you have habl-.
Add the new ending:
For -ar verbs, add -e: hable (I speak, subjunctive).
For -er and -ir verbs, add -a: coma (I eat, subjunctive), viva (I live, subjunctive).
Now you can create sentences like:
“Me alegra que hables español” (I’m glad you speak Spanish).
“Me preocupa que no comas bien” (It worries me that you don’t eat well).
“Me pone feliz que hagas tus deberes " (It makes me happy that you do your homework)
“Me enoja que salgas tarde en la noche” (It annoys me that you go out so late at night)
Let's go to an emotional consultation!
